Festive Fall Events In Clay County

Hey Clay County! Summer is coming to a close, and that means that it is time for our Fall Events!

Jesse James Festival

What: Food. Fishing. Volleyball. A 5K/10K race. A rodeo. A parade. The better question here is, “What ISN’T happening? Come and celebrate Kearney and its biggest claim to fame.

When: September 7th, 13th-16th, and 18th. Whoa!

Where: Jesse James Park in Kearney (21216 James Farm Rd, Kearney, MO 64060)

Cost: Really depends. Check out jessejamesfestival.com and see which festival events you would like to participate in; a lot of them are free, but some do require a fee.

September 11th Day of Remembrance

We hold an annual 9/11 ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Courtyard Plaza (at the corner of Kansas and Water St in Historic Downtown Liberty). This starts at 9:00 am and everyone is welcome to come.

Fall Black Powder Shoot

What: A shooting contest hosted by Friends of the James Farm. Cap & Ball or Cartridge Revolvers. Fixed sights and dueling stance only.

When: September 15 – Registration 8:00 am, shoot begins at 9:00 am

Where: Jesse James Farm (21216 James Farm Rd, Kearney, MO 64060)

Cost: $25 entry fee

Mt. Gilead Monday Program: Back to School with Laura Ingalls Wilder

What: A day for 1-8 graders to experience school in the 1800s including history, games, and crafts.

When: September 17, 10am-2pm.

Where: Historic Mt. Gilead School in Kearney (15918 Plattsburg Rd)

Cost: $10 per person. To reserve your spot call (816) 736-8500.

Smithville Lake Clean-up Day

What: An opportunity to give back to the lake we’ve enjoyed all summer. Great for groups looking to volunteer.

When: September 22 starting at 8:30 am.

Where: Sailboat Cove at Smithville Lake (

Cost: Free, plus you get lunch. Register by calling (816) 407-3653.

Liberty Fall Fest

What: A festival to celebrate fall with food, games, performances, vendors, and a parade!

When: September 28-30. Friday 11-9; Saturday 9-9; Sunday noon-4.

Where: Historic Downtown Liberty
